Harold L. "Leonard" Benson, 90, of Loxahatchee, FL, passed away peacefully with his loving wife, Nancy Benson (nee Benedetti) by his side at their home in Palm Beach County on March 3, 2024. Leonard was born on September 19, 1933 in Little Genesee, NY to his parents, Harold P. Benson and Ethel Benson (nee DeGroff). As a youth, Leonard grew up in rural Allegany County, NY playing football and the trombone before graduating from Bolivar Central School in 1951. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and remained on active duty for the next 23 years before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Class in 1974. While on active duty, Leornard was stationed in various Continental states and was deployed overseas four times, serving in France, Germany, and Vietnam. As his military career progressed, he became a subject matter expert in Army maintenance and logistics affairs. Chief Benson received numerous distinguished awards and decorations during his service tenure including two Bronze Stars for valor. Leonard was a life member and past Master of the F. & A.M. Lodge #258 in Bolivar, NY. He thoroughly enjoyed working on vehicles and equipment of all types, riding motorcycles, and operating and maintaining all things mechanical. He truly loved to spend time with Nancy, his beloved wife of 44 years, his family and close friends, especially his neighbor and close companion, Mike Kay, and his rescue dog, Angel. Surviving Leonard besides his wife are a daughter, Wendy Pounds of Chicora, PA; two sons, Kenneth Benson of Karns City, PA, and Phillip Benson of Sinclairville, NY; many nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, Christian Simpson, Liza Norcross, and Daryl Benson; and, three great-grandsons, Vincent, Dominik, and Lorenzo Olmstead. In addition to his parents, Leonard was predeceased by his brothers, Donovan Benson, Larry Benson, Glenn Benson, Robert Benson; his sister, Shirley Pounds; and his son, Ronald Benson. There is no planned visitation or open funeral service. A private military burial will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at the South Florida National Cemetery.
