Ways you can honor Richard's memory:
Richard Ian Forrest Fennell (Ian) 92, passed away peacefully in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on the 12 th of November 2023, where he had lived for the past 17 years with Janet (Jan), his wife of 58 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Richard Brian Fennell (Luisa Evans) of Ft. Lauderdale FL, Ian Scott Fennell of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Charmaine Fennell Castle of Skaneateles, NY, his grandchildren, David & India Fennell of Palm Beach, FL, Jeremy & Jillian Castle of Skaneateles, NY and bonus grandchildren, Scott (Leah), Kevin and Eric Castle and bonus great granddaughter Brinley. His brother Michael Fennell (Peggy) of Red Hills, Jamaica, several nieces and nephews who adored their “Uncle Ian”.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Dorothy Fennell, sisters, Joy Soutar and MarjorieRickards, nephew Peter Rickards and his lifelong friends Gerry & Barbara Spracklin.
Ian was born in St. James, Jamaica on the 5 th of September 1931. He was a devout Christian to the Lutheran – Missouri Synod religion and until recently never missed a Sunday service and continued to watch online. In his younger years he was an active member of the church and served on the Board for many years.
To those who knew him or were lucky enough to meet him, would know that he was a great storyteller, and those stories never missed a detail and always had the “characters” first and last names and he certainly did meet a lot of characters in his lifetime. His memories of working for J Wray & Nephew brought smiles to his face when he spoke of “Island Hopping” and selling the best rum EVER, Appleton, and don’t ever try to tell him any different.
He met the love of his life, Jan in 1959 in Montego Bay, JA. Their beautiful love story carried through the generations as they would share the story not only to their children, but their grandchildren as well. Jan was an American living in Chicago, and they wrote love letters for about six years and visited each other as often as they could before he finally asked her to marry him in front of the Buckingham Fountain and then married in Chicago on May 1, 1965 and lived in Jamaica. A little over a year later, the twins (Brian & Scott) were born and four years later his little girl, Charmaine (whom he named) was born. They resided in Jamaica until 1977 when they made the decision for the family to move to the states. They settled and raised their family in Skaneateles, a small town in central New York until 2005. Although he lived close to one of the cleanest lakes in the world for over 25 years, he never swam in Skaneateles Lake as he remained faithful to the Caribbean Sea and the salt water.
He was an avid water polo and golf player in his youth and once in the states added the love ofracquetball and tennis. Ian loved to dance too and certainly could “cut a rug” with the love of his life, Jan. They were flawless on the dance floor.
He was loyal to his family and friends and would tell everyone now, “don’t mek a fuss, I lived a goodlife”.
Services will be held on Wednesday, November 22 nd, with a viewing prior for family and friends at10:00am and the service beginning at 11:00am. Reception to follow. Faith Lutheran Church, 555 USHighway 1, North Palm Beach.
