DICK SABOL, STAGE AND SCREEN ACTOR

Dick Sabol passed away peacefully on April 22, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. Born on April 5, 1937 in Yonkers, New York, Dick was a critically acclaimed actor for his roles inCotton Comes to Harlem(1970) andCome Back Charleston Blue(1972)both produced by Samuel Goldwyn, Jr.

On Broadway, Dick was in the award-winning musicals "A Little Night Music," produced and directed by Hal Prince, and "Promises, Promises," produced by David Merrick. He also created the role of Boris in "Three Bags Full," by Jerome Chodorov and directed by Gower Champion. He made appearances on all major TV networks. Some of his most notable television credits include the specials "Bob Hope in Central Park," "The Man Without a Country," starring Cliff Robertson, and two segments of "The Jackie Gleason Show". He was also featured as Tim Braithwaite in the gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows"for a memorable episode in 1970.

Before launching his career in show business, Dick honorably served in the US Navy as a Radar Controlman on the U.S.S. Holder during the Korean War from 1955-1958. He was known as "Stretch" for his 6'5" height. After his military service, his tall, commanding stature helped him land many roles as police officers, athletes, and imposing "heavies" such as Big Jule in "Guys and Dolls", which he played on stage many times across the country.

Perhaps his proudest achievement, however, was serving as a Sponsor for Alcoholics Anonymous. Sober for over 50 years, Dick helped countless people overcome their addiction to alcohol and was a fixture at local meetings in and around Margate, FL and outside Albany, NY.

He was a loving father and grandfather and is survived by his son, Richard Sabol and wife, Maria, granddaughter, Veronica, as well as a nephew, John, three nieces, and their families. He was predeceased by his older brother, John, a skilled carpenter and contractor, who died in 2008. They grew up together in Fairlawn, NJ.

A private memorial service will be held at a future date.
