Sergio Micheli

Sergio Micheli, KM, KCHS, age 76, of Singer Island, formerly of Arlington, Virginia, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2019. Born in Carrara, Italy, on September 3, 1942, he immigrated to the United States in 1962 where he soon met and married Maria "Pilar" Rodriguez Micheli in 1965. They had Maria Teresa (Michael) Puletti, and Richard Jesus (Nikie) Micheli, who blessesd them with six grandchildren; Nicholas, Joseph, Alexandra, Mia Puletti, and Maximilian and Gabriella Micheli. Sergio worked for the Italian Embassy when he arrived, and went on to work at the 1789 Restaurant, and for Ambassador Wiley T. Buchanan, Jr. In 1970, he and his wife opened The Portofino Restaurant in Crystal City, Virginia. Their success allowed them to open several other restaurants including: The Firenze Restaurant in Bethesda, MD.; The Firenze Restaurant, Arlington, VA.; and the Café Italia, Arlington, VA. Always generous with his time and talent, he trained many other chefs and managers who went on to open their own restaurants in the DC area. Despite his cultured palate, he still enjoyed Chinese food, cannoli cream, and McDonald's coffee. Sergio became an American Citizen in 1975. His love for the United States and his Catholic faith led to an active life of community service. He was involved in Arlington community events; organizing local golf charity tournaments; work with Catholic University, Leukemia Society, Prevent Blindness; an active member of the Arlington Catholic Diocese; Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., andSt. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Riviera Beach, Florida. For the last twenty years he has worked tirelessly to support the Sisters of Charity's school for children in Cite Soleil, Haiti. He was an active member of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Also, he was a member of the Marine Corps Marathon Ad Hoc Committee and was inducted into the Marine Corps Marathon Hall of Fame. he has been honored with many awards and commendations over the course of his life. He travelled extensively for both pleasure and charity work to China, Russia, Cuba, Haiti, and Japan, to name a few, as well as many parts of the United States. He loved to ski, play tennis and golf at Bryce Mountain, Virginia. Over the years, he was a member of the Army Navy Country Club and The Touchdown Club. He was an avid Redskin fan; even a current season ticket holder, and as a member of Joe Gibbs' coaches club, travelled with the team to several Superbowl victories. He was blessed with many friends whom he would entertain at his restaurants and homes. He was known for his zest for life and jokes, no matter how in-appropriate. His favorite song was "It's Hard To Be Humble." because he was "Perfect in every way". He would jest the title of his autobiography would have been, "Who Gives a Shit". "To know him was to love him; he was a hell of a man". Sergio was preceded in death by his father, Adelmo Micheli; his mother, Cristina "Augusta" DeCesari Micheli; and his brother, lose Micheli. A viewing and wake service were held at the funeral home Monday evening, August 26, 2019. Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated, in memory of Sergio, at 2:00 PM Friday, September 6, 2019, at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, 3901 Cathedral Lane, Arlington, Virginia.
